22nd August 2020 Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 15-30 + kts Surf / Sea State: Flattish Air Temperature: Warm Sea Temperature: Warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 19.2 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 24nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Another 5 star day at Bradders on foil marred by the fact I used 7.8 instead of 7m sail. The wind was SW.so not ideal for fin but fine on foil. Had a choice of early starts to PC or Mersea with other sailors but messages from Graham and Dave who was camping there made it a no brainer as plenty of parking and only 25 mins or so from home. Even so was still late after a lie in due to boozy Friday. On arrival it' was very windy. The camp next door had loads of campers and chatted to a few peeps I hadn't seen for awhile. Keith Atkinson was down without kit but between us sorted him out on my JP 132. The dude made my board look sic fast, laying down gybe after gybe using Nick's 7.9 GA Vapor. He also rigged my Goya 7.8 and stupidity I took it out on foil instead of rigging 7.0 with DC Nich and Graham going out on 8m I knew I was too big and got hammered after the offshore wind band of 25 metres. Had to beat up towards Mistley hoping the trees would kill the wind. Had great runs in the wide bay there and thank fully the 30kts gusts only lasted 10 mins or so each time. Used the 76 slingshot foil wing today and worked nicely in the gusts clocking 19.2 kts max spd. The big gusts were coming thru all the time so decided to brave the downwind leg and rig smaller but luckily I got my act together and concentrated more as I only seemed to have mastered upwind foI ling. Nice runs down towards Holbrook bay but had to turn back as just to windy. Thankfully I could land on the farside and see out the gusts whilst watching KA slamming down gybe after gybe on the JP 132 fin board. Dave and Nick were racing in the bay whilst Graham was everywhere. Jason seemed ti be struggling on fin with the gusts. Probably the fastest my JP bd has been with KA on board! After making my way back upwind to Mistley the wind eased again so I was back in front and rear straps very comfortable. The downwind leg started going like a dream, as DC advice to change to underhand grip if over powered and unhook whilst the gusts came. Didn't breech once after that although Graham pissed past on his Starboard 177 race, the board I have my eyes on. Gutted as he gave me the smile and finger salute... Had 2 1/2 hours of non stop foiling but arrived late and the tide was running hard so I came in. The high tide was huge when I came, right up to the bank and 3 guys went out again as the wind picked up again. Def tempted but promised the other half I would not be home late. However chatting took another hour with John the farmer offering a free "real" burger as he called it, direct from the farm. Had to turn it down as it was Chinese evening pre-orderby washed down by Sol Mexican beer. What a nice drink that is! Popped over to the camp to see DC and Mags. Nice caravan setup! Staying at the camp 3 days from Thursday in MH so checked out showers and toilets.Very nice indeed! And the food van was doing good business. Prob 50 campers with tents caravan MH's and T5 's. The are has ANOB status and the site views are very nice. Yep top popup camping. Doing it all again Sunday. |
